Background

The Research Council of Zimbabwe (RCZ) is participating in the Management of Research Calls project, under the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI). The Initiative aims to strengthen the capacities of Science Granting Councils (SGCs) in sub-Saharan Africa to support research and evidence-based policies that will contribute to economic and social development. Launched in April 2015, the Initiative has been strengthening the ability of Councils in 15 sub-Saharan African countries in order to: i) manage research, ii) to design, monitor research and give directions on policies based on the use of evidence, iii) to manage research competitions for development impact iv) to promote networking among themselves and with other science system actors. Research excellence, gender equality and inclusion, and strategic communication and knowledge uptake are cross-cutting issues. These capacity strengthening activities are expected to lead to more effective research investments and strengthened research leadership for development in sub-Saharan Africa. In an effort to achieve these objectives, the Initiative holds an annual Masterclass on an agreed topic. This year 2021, Zimbabwe with its co-hosts Botswana and Burkina Faso will host the Masterclass virtually, in line with the contemporary and novel COVID-19.
